A Note on Berkshire’s Watchmaking Heritage

Christopher Ward, based in Maidenhead

Berkshire has a real place in modern British watchmaking. Christopher Ward was founded in 2004 by Chris Ward, Mike France and Peter Ellis — reportedly conceived during a conversation on a boat on the Thames — and is headquartered in Maidenhead, where its watches are designed before being assembled in Biel, Switzerland. It was the first luxury-style watch brand to sell exclusively online, direct to customers at markedly lower prices. The brand grew into one of the best-known contemporary British watch names.

A British brand with its own movement

The company also set out to make its own movements: in 2014 it launched Calibre SH21, described at the time as the first commercially viable mechanical movement from a British brand in over fifty years, with a twin-barrel design giving a five-day, 120-hour power reserve. That design-led ambition is based right here in Berkshire, giving sellers in the county a genuine link to current British horology. Christopher Ward continues to develop its own calibres from Maidenhead today.
