A Note on Dundee City’s Watchmaking Heritage
Timex in Dundee
Dundee was a British watchmaking city for almost half a century. The American firm Timex opened in the city in 1946 and grew into a major employer, running two plants — Milton, which made tools and components, and Camperdown, which handled assembly. Its Dundee workforce peaked at around 6,000 in 1974, and at its height in 1982 the operation produced some 2.5 million watches in a single year. The first Dundee plant had opened at Dryburgh in December 1946, and by 1966 Timex was the city’s third-largest single employer.
Computers, and the 1993 dispute
Dundee’s Timex also diversified: in the early 1980s the factory built Sinclair home computers, including the ZX81 and ZX Spectrum. The story ended with one of Britain’s last great industrial disputes — the 1993 strike ran from 29 January to late August, around 340 workers were dismissed, and the factory closed for good, ending large-scale watchmaking in the city. For decades Timex had been one of the largest private employers in Dundee.
