How It Works

Selling a Watch From Powys

Wherever you are in Powys, selling to us works the same way and the offer is based on the watch, not your postcode. Start with a free online valuation; if you are happy to go ahead we send a free, fully insured postal kit you can hand in at any Post Office across Newtown, Brecon, Welshpool, Llandrindod Wells or anywhere else in the area. You are paid by bank transfer the same day we receive and authenticate your watch.

A Note on Powys’s Watchmaking Heritage

The “Tick-Tock” factory at Ystradgynlais

Powys was home to one of Britain’s most remarkable watch factories. The Gurnos Works at Ystradgynlais — known locally as the “Tick-Tock” factory — opened in 1947 as the Anglo-Celtic Watch Company, with shares held equally by Smiths English Clocks, Ingersoll and the engineering firm Vickers-Armstrongs, which sold its stake in 1948. It brought large-scale watchmaking and thousands of skilled jobs to the Welsh valleys almost overnight.

Britain’s largest watch factory

At its mid-1960s peak the plant employed over 1,400 people and turned out around 30,000 watches a week, making it the largest watch-manufacturing factory in Britain and one of the largest in Europe. By the time it closed in 1980 it had produced and exported some 30 million watches worldwide — a horological heritage few places in the UK, and nowhere else in Wales, can match. Coflein, the national record of the historic environment of Wales, lists the Gurnos Works among the country’s significant twentieth-century industrial sites.
