A Note on Bristol’s Watchmaking Heritage

Fears of Bristol, founded 1846

Bristol has a watchmaking name of its own. Fears Watch Company was founded in the city by Edwin Fear in 1846, from workshops at 33–35 Redcliff Street in the city centre, and grew into a long-established British maker that supplied watches and clocks for well over a century before the original firm closed in 1976. The business remained a Bristol family concern, selling and repairing watches and clocks across generations.

Revived in the city

In November 2016 the brand was revived in Bristol by Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, the great-great-great-grandson of Edwin Fear, who relaunched it while training as a watchmaker; in 2017 he introduced the Brunswick, a mechanical model named after Bristol’s Brunswick Square. It is a living link between the city’s Victorian watchmaking and British horology today, and it gives a watch sold from Bristol a genuine local heritage. Today Fears is one of very few independent British watch brands designing in its home city.
