A Note on Gloucestershire’s Watchmaking Heritage
Smiths at Bishops Cleeve, near Cheltenham
Gloucestershire has a genuine twentieth-century watchmaking story. On 6 April 1939 S. Smith & Sons bought the 300-acre Kayte Farm at Bishop’s Cleeve, near Cheltenham, and built a factory that through the Second World War produced aircraft clocks, stopwatches and precision instruments for the war effort. By 1947 Cheltenham was the largest single site in a Smiths group employing some 17,000 people, with around 2,500 working there. Smiths was one of Britain’s major instrument and clock makers, and the Cheltenham factory became central to its watch and clock production for decades.
British-made wristwatches, and Everest
After the war the Cheltenham works turned to wristwatches, making well-regarded British movements and models — the De Luxe, Astral, Imperial and Everest ranges among them — until watch production wound down around 1970. A Smiths De Luxe made here was worn by Edmund Hillary on the first ascent of Everest in 1953, and reportedly performed well in the cold; the “Everest” model name commemorates that climb.
