A Note on City of London’s Watchmaking Heritage
The Worshipful Company of Clockmakers
The City of London is home to the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, founded by royal charter in 1631 and one of the oldest horological institutions in the world. For centuries the Company regulated the clock- and watchmaking trade of the City, examining workmanship and admitting masters to the craft. Over time it assembled what is believed to be the oldest specialist collection of clocks and watches anywhere, a record of British timekeeping stretching back to the trade’s earliest days.
The Clockmakers’ Museum
That collection — more than 600 watches, some 90 clocks and around 30 marine timekeepers, including John Harrison’s H5 sea watch — is displayed as the Clockmakers’ Museum, which moved to the Science Museum in London in 2015 after many years at Guildhall. Few places anywhere hold a deeper record of the craft, and it is a fitting backdrop to the Square Mile’s long association with fine timekeeping and precious-metal hallmarking. The Company remains active in the City today, supporting horology through awards and education.
