A Note on Greater London’s Watchmaking Heritage

Clerkenwell, the historic watchmaking district

London is the historic heart of British watch- and clockmaking. Clerkenwell, in the north of the City (EC1), was the dense workshop district where generations of case makers, dial painters, springers, escapement makers and finishers plied the trade through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The capital’s makers supplied the City’s retailers and a large export market, and London-signed watches were prized the world over. That concentration of specialist skill made the capital a world centre of the craft for well over two hundred years.

Hatton Garden, the precious-metals quarter

Alongside the watch trade, neighbouring Hatton Garden grew into Britain’s diamond and jewellery quarter. By 1907 a few streets held some 264 allied businesses — around 35 silversmiths, 45 jewellery manufacturers and 78 diamond firms clustered together. Hatton Garden remains the capital’s jewellery and precious-metals centre today, still home to the case makers, setters and metalworkers whose skills sit behind a fine gold or precious-metal watch. Many of the trade’s finest surviving pieces still carry London signatures.
